Last week, I visited a job that was unfortunately a disaster. The bifold door had been completely ruined due to a botched installation by what were clearly inexperienced installers. The only solution is a full replacement. The job was riddled with issues, including manufacturing defects where timber was used for reinforcement instead of steel, and doors being made the wrong way around with incorrect drainage setup. The poor client had invested nearly $150,000, and now, the company they used is nowhere to be found. Why? They’ve gone into liquidation.

This company was based in Melbourne, which raises another crucial point – when buying windows, it’s important to choose a company that’s locally based. When things go wrong, it’s much easier to fix them quickly and efficiently if the company is nearby. In this case, the customer had to pay for flights and accommodation for the installers for two days of work (in which only 4 items were installed and when the installers didn’t show up on the third day – the fine print was brought forward by the company revealing only 2 days of work is covered in the installation cost – which was not cheap by any means). They then had to pay again for them to return and attempt to fix their own mistakes. Unfortunately, it didn’t end there. Large windows were installed without any additional reinforcement and everything was out of level and plumb. This makes for windows that are literally wobbling in the breeze and bouncing when sashes are closed. 

The clients felt they were trapped and couldn’t do anything besides hope that this company would fix their downfalls. It wasn’t until they went into liquidation that the clients knew they were in strife and needed some external advice. 

This experience highlights the importance of doing plenty of research before choosing a window company. Here are some key tips and tricks to ensure you’re selecting the right company for your job:

1. Check How Long They’ve Been in Business

The first step is to check the company’s history. Using the ABN Lookup website, you can easily see how long the company has been in operation. A business that has been around for several years is more likely to have a track record of successful installations and satisfied customers. It’s also a good indicator that the company is stable and won’t suddenly disappear, leaving you with unresolved issues.

2. Read Google Reviews

Reviews are a great way to get insight into how a company operates. Check Google reviews for genuine feedback from other customers. Look for consistent positive experiences and how the company handles any negative reviews. If a business consistently ignores or poorly responds to complaints, it could be a red flag.

3. Look at Local Forums and Social Media

Local forums and community groups can offer valuable, unfiltered advice. Many people share their experiences with trades and services on social media or local home improvement forums. You may find firsthand recommendations (or warnings) about companies in your area.

4. Ask About the Installers

The quality of the installation is just as important as the quality of the windows. Don’t hesitate to ask who will be installing your windows and how experienced they are. Look for a company that uses in-house installers or has long-term relationships with trusted contractors. Avoid companies that subcontract without oversight, as that can lead to inconsistent results.

5. Get Everything in Writing

A reputable company will have no problem providing detailed, written quotes and contracts. Make sure everything, including installation details, warranty, and the scope of work, is clearly outlined. This protects you in case something goes wrong.

6. Understand the Payment Terms

Payment terms are a key factor to consider when selecting a window company. Be cautious of companies that demand large upfront payments or full payment before any work has begun. A fair and reasonable payment structure typically involves:

• A small deposit to secure your booking or cover initial materials.
• A staged payment plan where additional payments are made as key milestones are reached (e.g., after delivery or partial installation).
• The final payment upon completion of the job, ensuring the work has been done to your satisfaction.

This not only protects your finances but also gives the company an incentive to complete the job to a high standard. Never pay in full upfront, as this leaves you vulnerable if the company fails to deliver.

7. Local Is Always Better

Choosing a local company can save you time and headaches. If something does go wrong, it’s much easier to get the issue fixed promptly by a company based nearby. Dealing with an interstate company often means longer wait times and additional costs, such as travel expenses for installers, as seen in the unfortunate example I mentioned earlier.

8. Warranty and After-Sales Service

Don’t overlook the importance of a solid warranty. Ask about the company’s after-sales service and whether they offer ongoing support. A reputable company will stand behind their product and provide assistance even after the installation is complete.
